Arizona Gov. Extends National Guard Border Mission Over Border Crisis

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey announced on Aug. 18 a one-year extension of the Arizona Army National Guard’s border security mission, accusing President Joe Biden of having “utterly failed” to contain illegal immigration at the southern border. “It’s clear that this White House has neither the ability nor the desire to address the border disaster—a crisis of their own making,” Ducey said in a statement. The extension comes as the federal government earlier this month reported a 21-year record high number of illegal border crossings. In April, Ducey issued a Declaration of Emergency in Arizona and deployed National Guard troops along the state’s 378-mile southern border with Mexico. “Illegal immigrant apprehensions are the highest in two decades.
