Elon Musk says Twitter will grant ‘amnesty’ to suspended accounts after poll

Must Read

New Twitter owner Elon Musk announced another directive by Twitter poll Thursday.

The controversial billionaire announced he planned on granting “amnesty” to suspended accounts after more than 70% of users favored reinstating banished accounts that haven’t broken any laws or taken part in “egregious spam.”

“The people have spoken,” Musk tweeted on Thanksgiving. “Amnesty begins next week. Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” which is the Latin phrase for “the voice of the people, the voice of God.”

This is the second time in several days that Musk used unscientific polling – that can easily be swayed by bots – to make a notable decision about the social media company’s future.

He announced former President Donald Trump was allowed back on the site after he was tossed from it following the riot on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump has yet to tweet since he was welcomed back and claimed he won’t return to the company.

Trump regularly posts his online thoughts on Truth Social now.

The day after Musk, also the CEO of Tesla, took over Twitter last month, he said he would form a “content moderation council” to decide which suspended accounts would be allowed back on.

But he said Tuesday he would not go through with that proposal because “a large coalition of political-social activist groups” later “broke the deal” by pushing for advertisers to stop giving Twitter their business, at least temporarily.

Musk also made news this week when he allowed the personal account of Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene back on the site. She was banned in January for breaking rules connected to the app’s COVID misinformation policies.
