MOSCOW—Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was laid to rest Saturday in a subdued farewell, leaving a divisive legacy over whether he was the liberator or destroyer of a onetime empire.

Mr. Gorbachev, the eighth and final leader of the Soviet Union, died Tuesday at age 91 at Moscow’s central clinical hospital following a lengthy illness.
