I Ditched My Black Plastic Spatula for This Nontoxic Alternative

I have a very crowded utensil holder filled with tools and gadgets that I’ve accumulated over many years. After a failed attempt to cram in a brand-new olive-wood spoon, I realized it was time to clear out my crock. Most of the utensils were pretty cheap, quite worn, and really should have been tossed a long time ago—including my black plastic spatula. Though that spatula served me well, with the news that black plastic utensils can leach harmful toxic chemicals, I thought it was time I switched to a safer alternative. My pick: Material’s Soft-Edge Turner. I reach for it practically every day. It’s out of stock for good on Material’s website, but luckily, I found it on sale for just $14 at The Container Store.

Material is an editor-loved brand known for crafting superior nontoxic cookware and kitchen tools (and BA editors love their cutting boards). The Soft-Edge Turner is no exception. Made from BPA-free silicone with a reinforced nylon core, the spatula has a slightly curved head and a long, sturdy handle with a stainless steel cap. It’s nonstick, dishwasher-safe and heatproof up to 450°.

Material Soft-Edge Turner

Unlike my cheap black plastic spatula, Material’s Soft-Edge Turner performs like a champ. The handle provides a comfortable, firm grip when I’m cooking, and the flexible spatula head has just the right amount of give. I’ve used it to effortlessly flip fluffy scrambled eggs and pancakes, turn over hefty meats like pork chops and turkey burgers, and serve dense dishes like baked pastas and brownies. The spatula’s soft rounded edges make it easy to get into the corners of pans and safe to scrape the surface without leaving scratches. And because the silicone Soft-Edge Turner is resistant to stains and stuck-on food, it’s super easy to clean and does come out too red after serving lasagna. A quick wash with warm soapy water and a sponge is all it takes to get it looking good as new.

The Soft-Edge Turner is now the most-used tool in my utensil crock—sorry, olive-wood spoon!—and I feel better knowing that I don’t have to worry about toxic chemicals when I’m frying bacon, roasting vegetables, baking cookies, or serving eggplant parmesan. If you’re looking for a versatile nontoxic spatula, snag the Soft-Edge Turner for 30% off before it’s gone forever.
