Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro joins its fragile predecessor on JerryRigEverything’s Shelf of Shame

Must Read

The 6 Pro joins the 5 Pro. (Source: JerryRigEverything via YouTube)The ROG Phone 6 Pro is an Android flagship with a class-leading 165Hz display, a rear-facing RGB secondary display and an increasingly rare 3.5mm jack. However, it also has a predecessor that failed the ever-popular JerryRigEverything test of structural integrity. Can the ~US$1,300 gaming smartphone do any better in 2022?…apparently not.

The ROG Phone 6 Pro launched with a markedly bulky chassis housing a generous 6.78-inch AMOLED display, a 6,000mAh battery and a whole load of cooling for its top-end Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor with up to 18GB of RAM. All that lends an impression of solidity to the new Asus mobile flagship.

However, as JerryRigEverything’s Zach Nelson demonstrated, all is not as it appears – especially given the example set by the 6 Pro’s 2021 forebear. Its rear panel crumbled like a cookie made of glass during the channel’s famous bend test – and, unfortunately, its successor has just done the same.

This second-gen “catastrophic” failure was attributed to the return of a dual-battery set-up for faster 65W charging within this US$1,000+ device, which with its secondary, landscape-oriented USB type-C port, certainly seem to create a point of weakness along the frame of this phone.

Despite its potential in-game charging advantages, the 6 Pro’s failure to break its series’ losing streak might seem all the more galling as its premium mobile gaming rival the RedMagic 7 coasted to a win on its own JerryRigEverything appearance, and costs about half as much on Amazon today.

I became a professional writer and editor shortly after graduation. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in the biotech area, which convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and lives in general. This developed into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of tech over time: I can never write enough on the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and streaming all the things. Oh, and coffee.
