In holdover box office news for Friday, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned another $10.8 million on Friday, dropping 59% and crossing $100 million domestic on day eight. Presuming an Easter Sunday dive, the film should earn around $28.4 million (-61%) in weekend two for a $118 million ten-day cume. Presuming the domestic/overseas split remains as it was on Sunday, the $110 million video game sequel should have around $233 million worldwide by tomorrow.

The question is whether it’ll hold firm over the next two months (since most of what’s coming between now and Lightyear, save for The Bad Guys next week, is aimed at adults or older kids) or just play close to Kong: Skull Island and 300: Rise of an Empire and still finish somewhere between $160 million and $180 million domestic. Either result will put it past Sonic the Hedgehog ($148 million) and wherever Uncharted ends up ($145 million-and-counting) as the biggest video game grosser ever.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

A24

Paramount’s other breakout hit, The Lost City, earned another $2.07 million (-21%) on its fourth Friday. That sets up the $70 million Sandra Bullock/Channing Tatum flick for a $5.45 million (-40%) weekend and a $77 million 24-day total. As day 25 is a holiday, the original, star-driven rom-com adventure could pass Scream ($80 million) as early as Monday.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All At Once expanded into 2,220 theaters in weekend four and held firm. The Michelle Yeoh/Ke Huy Quan/Stephanie Hsu multiverse fantasy earned $1.915 million (-11%) on Friday for a likely $4.75 million (-2%) weekend and a $16.24 million ten-day total. This is an incredibly positive result for the A24 gem and the closest thing we’re getting to an Easter miracle this weekend.

Robert Pattinson in ‘The Batman’

Warner Bros.

Sony’s Morbius received no immaculate resurrection this weekend, earning another $1.575 million (-46%) on Friday for a likely $4.2 million (-58%) weekend and $65 million 17-day cume. The $75 million Jared Leto superhero movie will crawl past $70 million.

Michael Bay’s very good Ambulance earned $1.3 million (-59%) on its second Friday for a likely $3.7 million (-57%) weekend and a $15.5 million ten-day total. That’s a lousy result for a $40 million actioner, although we’ll see if PVOD business compensates accordingly.

Warner Bros.’ The Batman will earn $3.35 million (-48%) in its final “in theaters only” weekend, bringing its cume to $364.5 million and (after today) past the unadjusted gross of Deadpool ($363 million). It should be just over/under $750 million worldwide by tomorrow. Uncharted has passed Detective Pikachu ($144.1 million) and will zoom past Sonic 1 ($148 million) next week to be, sans inflation, the biggest-grossing video game movie at least until Sonic 2 catches up.
