From the Jingle Ball to Radio City Music Hall, Girls5eva is taking over Netflix! The all-star musical comedy found a new home on the streaming platform after being canceled by Peacock. Now, the streamer houses the first two seasons as well as the brand-new third season. But will there be a fourth?
Created by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt alum Meredith Scardino and executive produced by Tina Fey, the show follows the titular ’90s girl group as they reunite in the present after a young rapper samples one of their songs. The cast includes Sara Bareilles, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell.
The six-episode third season sees Girls5eva embarking on a comeback tour following the release of their new album.
Ahead of the Season 3 premiere, Decider spoke with Scardino about the future of the series. “We’re not greenlit for another season,” she said. “I would like to do one. I would like to see the story continue, assuming people watch it and love it.”
The showrunner continued to say that she doesn’t want to reveal her plans for the future but revealed that she has “a notes app of a bunch of ideas and things” she’d like to see play out in the girl group’s professional and personal lives.
During our conversation, Scardino praised Netflix and dubbed them supporters of the series. “They were wonderfully supportive of the show from the jump,” said Scardino. “I have emails from [VPs of Original Series at Netflix] Andy [Weil] and Tracey [Pakosta] loving the show when it first came out on Peacock. They’ve always loved it. I’m so happy to work with them.”
As of now, Girls5eva has not been renewed by Netflix for a fourth season but that’s not much of a surprise given that the show is new to the platform. However, if you look at the success of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which shares a similar creative team to Girls5eva and also aired on Netflix, the series aired for four seasons and a supersized interactive special. The show received quick renewals with the seasons premiering roughly within a year of each other.
So, fans should expect an update soon! For what it’s worth, we’re fully on board for a fourth season of Girls5eva. As the star women would sing, “That’s one more than three!”
