Oakland police have arrested two individuals in connection with the shooting of Kon “Patrick” Fung, who was killed last month while he sat in his car to deliver a meal.
Police announced on Friday that Major Willis, 19, and a minor were arrested on Aug. 9 following the July 17 incident on the 2000 block of 13th Ave. According to the Office of the Alameda County District Attorney, Willis has been charged with murder and attempted carjacking, while the minor has been charged in juvenile court.
“Mr. Fung was senselessly and violently attacked while doing his job,” District Attorney Nancy E. O’Malley said in a statement. “His death has rocked the Little Saigon community. Our hearts and condolences go out to his family, friends and community.”
The attack was caught on a surveillance camera, which showed the moment when two individuals approached Fung’s parked car at around 11 a.m. The individuals can be heard on surveillance footage ordering Fung to exit his vehicle, followed by a gunshot moments later.
Fung’s partner, who only identified herself as Judy, told KGO that Fung worked for Uber and was waiting inside his parked car near her home when the incident occurred. In the days that followed, the Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council set up a GoFundMe account with a goal of $110,000 to help support Fung’s family. As of Monday afternoon, more than $103,000 has been raised.
Oakland police shared that homicide detectives were able to make the arrests with the help of tips from locals, Oakland’s Violent Crime Operations Center and the San Francisco Police Department. An investigation is ongoing to find the driver of the get-away vehicle as well as a potential passenger.
