Secretary of State Marco Rubio spent much of July pressing a campaign against what the administration calls political terrorism and communist influence.
On July 16, the State Department hosted a “Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism” with representatives of more than 60 countries, and announced visa restrictions tied to the effort. On July 20, the department released a report titled “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism.”
Speaking to reporters in Manila on July 22, Rubio said, “We’re not going to allow communist influences to undermine our politics.”
Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, has long been a critic of the Cuban government. He serves as Secretary of State and national security adviser; he left the Senate in January 2025.
