President Donald Trump promised on September 9 that every U.S. adult would receive a $5,000 payment, which he called the “Trump Dividend,” if Republicans keep control of the House and Senate in November.
Trump made the pledge at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas. With roughly 270 million adults in the country, the payments would cost about $1.3 trillion to $1.35 trillion.
Vice President JD Vance suggested tariff revenue could fund the payments. House Speaker Mike Johnson said Congress would need to approve them. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called it “not a serious proposal.”
The White House published a statement promoting the plan, but no legislation had been introduced.
